Everyone has a story to tell but how do you actually go about turning that into a book that will speak to a general readership? How do you judge if your story has mass appeal? How do you decide what part of your life to write about? And when you have selected either a shorter time frame as Katja did (one year) or a longer one like Kamin (her childhood but also the sweep of over 100 years of history), how do you know who should be included in your book? In writing a memoir, you never just tell your own story – how do you deal with the delicate question of telling other people’s stories, asking for permission, letting others read your manuscript, changing identifying details, legal considerations.
